GOD'S PICTURE OF A HAPPY MAN

Introduction:

God is a great artist. In the first psalm, the first three verses, God has drawn a picture of a happy man. " Blessed is the man...". There are the three leading features in this picture;

  1. The happy man's separation from the world, v.1
  2. The happy man's occupation in the world,v.2
  3. The happy man's fruitfulness before the world,v.3

Psalm 1:1-3

"1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper."

SEPARATION

1. The Happy man's separation from the world or separation unto God.

The Happy man walk's alone or he is separate from the world. a) He walks not in the counsel of the wicked b) He standeth not in the way of sinners c) He sitteth not in the seat of the scorners.Walking, standing and sitting are the three spiritual exercises of a happy man. He gets the counsel of God, He stands in the presence of God, and saints and believers. He sits among the good people, the church. The Bible says:2 Corinthians 6:17-18

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

OCCUPATION OR COMMUNION

2. The Happy man's occupation in the world, or communion with God.

  1. He delights in the law of the Lord. He finds great pleasure in God's word ( JERE. 15:6; Job 23;12 )
  2. He meditates in God's word day and night. Note the word " meditate". It means deep, intense reflection upon what God says. And then note: ' day and night". Example: ISAAC, JOSHUA, DAVID are the people who meditated God's word sincerely. joshua 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
There are three keys to good success and Prosperity:
  1. speak the word of God
  2. meditate the wood of God
  3. observe to do all that is written therein

FRUITFULNESS

3. The Happy man's fruitfulness before the world or His fruitfulness in God.

The man who maintains separation from the world and communion with God will be like :

  1. A tree, i.e. he will have life, folage and fruit, or life, beauty and utility.
  2. He will be like a tree planted, i.e. he will be like an object of care and culture, and the caretaker will be God Himself.
  3. He will be like a tree planted by streams of water. i.e. there will be flowing around his roots a constant source of life, freshness, beauty, and fruitfulness. No fear of drought and barrenness for him.
  4. He will bring forth fruit in its season
  5. His leaf shall not wither. There will be unfailing life and unfading beauty.
  6. He shall never fail in prosperity. " Whatever he does shall prosper".

Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. ( John 15:2 )
