'…for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm".(Jonah 4:2b)

2. Background:

Jonah was a prophet of Israel who lived about the time of Jeroboam II (2 Kings 14:25). His name means dove, and he occupies a unique place as the first missionary. The historical character of Jonah's preservation in the great fish and his preaching to the inhabitants of Nineveh is attested by Christ, who likens the prophet's experience to His own burial and resurrection ( Matt.12:38-41).

The Sign of the Prophet Jonah

"Then came the Scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, Teacher, we want to see a sign from you. But He answered and said to them," An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the Prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh will rise up in the Judgement with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here"(Matt. 12:38-41).

Jonah is the only prophet whom Jesus likened to Himself. Jonah's experience is a type of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ( Messiah= the anointed). Jesus is the Christ, The Son of the Living God. The Book of Jonah is full of the supernatural; aside from the great fish, there are the vine, the worm, the east wind, and greatest of all, the repentance of the entire city of Nineveh.

3. God's Relationship with Man:

Jonah's character and God's dealing with him foreshadow the subsequent history of the nation of Israel. Outside the land, a trouble to the Gentiles, yet witnessing to them; cast out, but miraculously preserved; in future deepest distress calling upon the LORD as Savoir, finding deliverance and then becoming missionaries to the gentiles(Zechariah 8:7-23). But chiefly Jonah typifies Christ as the Sent One, raised from the dead, and carrying salvation to the gentiles.

4. Outline: The Book may be divided as follows:

5. Principles in Jonah ( Life Transformation is the Result of this study)

  1. Obedience to God's call important for a servant of God.
  2. The Lord answer's our Prayer and delivers us from destruction.
  3. The concept of death, burial and resurrection is a miracle in O.T. & N.T.
  4. God is the God of 2nd choice. God uses imperfect people. Examples: Moses, Jonah, Paul, Peter
  5. God is merciful, God loves all people- Gentiles or Jews.

" For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable"(Rom.11:29)." My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; For whom the LORD loves He chastens, and scourges every son whom He receives"( Heb.12:5,6).

God's calling is on my life. The LORD loves you. Therefore, He chastens you to make you fulfil His call on my and your life. Fasting is necessary, at least 3 days per month/year. Jonah fasted 3 days in the belly of the great fish. The people of Nineveh fasted three days. Their life style became better. God transformed their lives.

  1. God's Mercy upon Jonah, 1:1-2:10
  2. God's Mercy upon Nineveh,3:1-4:11

God is good, Praise Him; for His mercy endures for ever. The 48 verses in the Book of Jonah(17+10+10+11=48 verses) explains the Mercy of God. If you have tasted that the Lord is gracious, desire the pure milk of the word that you may grow thereby. Read the Book of Jonah. When you get to Heaven, Jonah will ask you, whether you have read His Book. How many of you have read the Book of Jonah? If not read His Book today. The reading time is only 12 Minutes.

6. Jonah:

The name Jonah means dove. He was a minor prophet who ran from God's call. Famous for surviving being swallowed by a great fish. Jonah's Home was Gath Hepher of Zebulun(2 Kings 14:25), north of Nazareth in Galilee, compare the misstatement quoted in John 7:52.

The first verse introduces Jonah as "The son of Amittai". 2.Kings 14:25 says that he was a prophet in the reign of Jeroboam II of Israel. Jonah was a Galilean. One tradition says that Jonah was the son of the widow of Zarepath whom Elijah raised from the dead (1.Kings 17:8-24). Jonah was a historical prophet:" He restored the territory of Israel from the entrance of Hamath to the sea of the Arabah, According to the Word of the LORD God of Israel, which He had spoken through His servant Jonah the son of Amittai, the Prophet who was form Gath Hepher"( 2 Kings 14:25).

7. Nineveh:

The capital of Assyria. It was noted for its cruelty and violence (Jon.3:8). This is confirmed by the ancient records found there. Under the preaching of Jonah in the 8 th Century B.C., the city and king had turned to God (Jon.3:3-10). God's call to repentance (change of mind and behaviour) is the important message. Jesus said: "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand, Repent, and believe in the gospel"(Mark 1:15).
