II. SURVEY OF ROMANS:

Quote by Famous Persons:

  1. Samuel Taylor Coleridge: He regarded Romans as “The most profound Book in Existence”.
  2. Godet: The Commentator Godet called it “The Cathedral of the Christian Faith”.
  3. Martin Luther : Because of its majestic declaration of the divine plan of salvation, Martin Luther wrote: “ This Epistle is the chief part of the New Testament and the very purest Gospel. It can never be read or pondered too much, and the more it is dealt with the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes”.
  4. Gospels: The Words and the works of The Lord Jesus

Romans: The significance of His death and Resurrection (The Gospel According to St. Paul)

The Theology of Romans is balanced by practical exhortation, because Paul sees the believer’s position as the basis for his practice. The theme RIGHTEOUSNESS runs through the Book.

Another Outline:

  1. The Revelation of the Righteousness of God (1-8)
  2. The Vindication of the Righteousness of God (9-11)
  3. The Application of the Righteousness of God(12-16)

III.The Theme of the Book:

“ For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jews first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith” . ( Romans 1:16,17)

These verses combines three crucial concepts:

  1. Salvation
  2. Righteousness
  3. Faith

In the Lord Jesus a righteousness from God is revealed as the answer to His wrath against sin. The Gift of righteousness is through faith in Jesus Christ.

  1. Condemnation
  2. Justification (Salvation)
  3. Sanctification
  4. Glorification
  5. Transformation

IV.Author: Apostle Paul

Theme: The Righteousness of God is Revealed
Date of Writing: 57 of First Century

V.Special Features: Seven Major emphases Characterize Romans:

  1. Romans is Paul’s most systematic written letter, the theological letter par excellence in the NT.
  2. Paul writes in a question and answer, or debating, style (e.g. 3:1,4-6,9,31)
  3. Paul uses the OT extensively as Scriptural authority for his presentation of the true nature of the Gospel.
  4. Paul presents “the righteousness of God” as the core revelation of the Gospel (1:16-17); God set things right in and through Jesus Christ.
  5. Paul focuses on the twofold nature of sin, along with God’s provision in Christ for each aspect:
    1. Sin as a personal transgression (1:1-5:11),and
    2. the “sin” (Gk. Hehamartia) principle, i.e. the inherent natural tendency to sin that lives within every person’s heart since Adam’s fall called being “in the flesh” ( 5:12-8:39).
  6. Romans 8 is the most extensive chapter in the Bible on the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.
  7. Romans contains the Bible’s most powerful discussion about the Jews’ rejection of Christ(exept for a remnant) and about God’s plan for a full- circle redemption that ultimately comes back to Israel(chs.9-11).
